We all know that London is, by some distance, the largest city in the country but Bristol ranks amongst the highest in terms of both population and population growth.
But how many people live in Bristol? Well, Centre for Cities (CFC) has released data that shows the 10 most populous cities in England. The results present some shocks with Bristol topping some sizeable counterparts in the list and less than 50,000 people separating second and third place for the largest city outside of the capital.
CFC uses the Government’s definition of a primary urban area to determine the boundaries of each city. This is defined by the Department for Communities and Local Government as a tool for analysing the major cities of England.
Here are the 10 most populous English cities:

Based in the West Midlands, Birmingham is the most populous city outside of London with an more than 2.5million residents. The city is known for its industrial roots but has more than 600 public parks and more more of canal than Venice.

Just behind Birmingham, in third place, is Manchester. The final city in England to hold more than 1million people within its limits, Manchester is known for its sporting and music heritage boasting Manchester United and Manchester City as well as bands such as Oasis, The Stone Roses and many more.
